A new green economy that works for everyone? Our post offices can deliver it. Our friends from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers were in town this month, organizing around their incredible Delivering Community Power campaign.
Canada Post is the countries' largest logistic network, and one of the largest retail outlets - with more post offices than Tim Horton's nationwide! Imagine if this massive institution embraced the transition economy by solarizing their rooftops, electrifying their vehicle fleet and building electric vehicle charging stations at every single outlet! That's what Delivering Community Power, a campaign of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the Friends of Public Services is calling for.
And there's more; their vision also includes expanding Canada Post services to include grocery delivery, checking in on seniors along their routes, and a postal banking service that would offer an alternative to predatory payday loan outlets. Delivering Community Power is exactly the kind of visionary, people-powered, out-of-the-box thinking that can bring about real transformation from the ground up. This practical, progressive, and holistic vision has inspired all of us here at Force of Nature, and we were proud to join them at their hall meeting and subsequent post-office "take-over" in Burnaby last month, and to pledge our ongoing support for DeCoPo as an official endorser of their campaign.
